The sanctuary is built around the tower house of the Loyola family. It is a building from the XIV-XV centuries, it is an architectural complex that was built around the tower house of the Loyola family. Two events make Loyola the center of a continuous pilgrimage: the birth of Íñigo López de Loyola in 1491 and his conversion in 1521.

San Miguel in Excelsis, is a Sanctuary with more than a thousand years of history, built in the Sierra de Aralar. The place will tell you about the legend of the dragon and Theodosius of Goñi, of the Carolingian past, of the remote times of dolmens that today appear scattered among fields and beautiful beech forests.
San Miguel is one of the best known spirituality centers in Navarra and a place of legends. It is said that Don Teodosio, lord of the region, lived in the Navarrese valley of Goñi in the 8th century. On his return from the war with the Arabs, he met a devil disguised as a hermit on the road, who told him that his wife had been cheating on him with a servant. Upon arriving home, Theodosius pierced the couple lying on his bed with his sword, unaware that they were his parents. As a penance, the pope condemned him to walk through the mountains carrying a cross and tied with chains until they broke. Wandering through the Sierra de Aralar, one day a dragon appeared to him and Teodosio invoked Saint Michael, who killed the beast and freed it from its chains. Right there, Theodosius erected the sanctuary in which the chains are kept and the relic of Saint Michael is venerated.
